Commercial and industrial electricity · National Electricity Market
Same price. Now with a Chief Energy Officer.
Data Meter is an energy brokerage for commercial and industrial electricity users across the National Electricity Market. We work from interval data, run the procurement tenders and check the bills. Our fee is disclosed.
Virtual Chief Energy Officer
We are your Virtual Chief Energy Officer
A 300 MWh site sits in an awkward gap. Too big for a retailer’s call centre, too small for an in-house energy manager. The meter, the tariff and the contract default to whatever landed first.
We close that gap. Same model as a fractional CFO: the function, the discipline and the data, without the salary.
- We monitor your usage
- We manage your tariff
- We run your contract renewals
- We report like an insider would
What we do
It starts with your interval data. Your site is metered in five-minute intervals, the record is yours, and almost nobody reads it. We read it, and then we act on what it says.
What your data shows
- Which intervals cost you
- A handful of half-hour peaks each month set your demand charge. We can name them.
- Capacity you are not using
- Where your tariff carries a contracted capacity and the measured peak sits well below it, you have been paying for headroom you never drew.
- What is actually consuming the power
- Sub-circuit monitoring separates HVAC, refrigeration, lighting, workshop and charging, instead of one number for the whole site.
- Whether the bill matches the contract
- Checked every cycle, line by line, not on a sample.
- How your load will price at tender
- Retailers price on the shape of your consumption as well as its volume. We know your shape before they quote.
What we do about it
- Run the tender at expiry
- A panel of retailers, a written process, and offers normalised so they can actually be compared, priced against the forward curve and your own load shape rather than against whoever quoted first.
- Fix the network tariff
- Sites are commonly left on the tariff they were connected under. Where a better one applies, we prepare the case and put it to your retailer and the network.
- Hand back unused capacity
- A paperwork change rather than a capital project. No equipment, no outage, and the saving recurs every month.
- Recover what you were overcharged
- Where validation finds an error, we chase the credit.
- Time the controllable load
- On a fixed-price contract, moving load does not change your energy rate. It changes your demand charge, it catches a network time-of-use signal, and it improves the shape you are priced on. We say which applies before anything moves.
- Specify and tender the projects
- Solar, battery storage, EV charging, and efficiency work on motors, compressed air, refrigeration and lighting. We write the specification, run the tender and verify the result on the metering.
- Get the certificates claimed
- Government energy efficiency and demand response schemes will pay for part of that work where the saving can be measured. We build the measurement from sub-circuit data and work with an accredited certificate provider to create and sell the certificates.
- Take the metering direct
- We are establishing metering coordination so that, where it suits the site, the meter sits under an agreement with us rather than with your retailer. The data then comes to you directly, and the meter does not change every time the retailer does.
- Report every month
- What you used, what it cost, what changed, and what we did about it.
On a new site we start with the demand charge and the capacity. Both are answerable from twelve months of data in a few weeks, neither needs you to buy anything, and between them they usually pay for the engagement. If there is nothing there, we say so.
Fees and commission
A monthly fee, itemised and agreed in advance. Where we act as broker, a commission from the retailer, disclosed to you in writing before you sign anything.
We do not describe the service as free, and we do not recover the fee through an uplift on your rate.
We specify and tender project work. We do not install it and we hold no equipment line, so the advice and the verification stay independent of whoever wins the job.
About us
Data Meter is an Australian owned energy brokerage. We are based in Sydney and work across the National Electricity Market, concentrating on New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.
Its founders have spent years negotiating aggregated electricity supply for large groups of commercial sites, and building the operational systems that let a small team run a large book properly. That is what the business is built on.
Typical sites are motor dealerships, registered clubs, medium manufacturers, shopping centres, and data and control centres. Most use between 150 MWh and 5 GWh a year.
Contact
Twelve months of bills for one site is enough for us to say something specific.
Metering providers, data providers and retailers: write to the same address and we will send you the brief.
